    Effect of gender on P-wave dispersion in asymptomatic populations

    Background: Exercise testing is a diagnostic tool for evaluating the induction of stress-induced paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Resting P-wave dispersion has been suggested to be greater in males versus females but if used by clinicians, gender difference in response to exercise must be determined. Methods: Sixteen healthy subjects (n=8 male, age: 21±0.3; n=8 female, age: 23±1.4) performed an incremental exercise test using the Bruce protocol. Electrocardiograms were recorded at rest, end-exercise, 1, 3, and 5 mins recovery. P-waves were measured in each lead with the maximum (P-max) and minimum (P-min) P-wave durations and dispersion calculated. Results: There was a significant decrease in P-max from rest to end-exercise in males and females [males, 118.3±7.4 (95%CI: 109.7 to 126.8ms) vs. 97.9±6.2 (89.3 to 106.4ms); females, 109.4±4.5 (100.8 to 117.9ms) vs. 94.3±4.6 (85.7 to 102.8ms); p=0.001 (5.7 to 29.8ms)]. Similarly, for P-min [males, 65.6±5.6 (57.4 to 73.9ms) vs. 50.8±2.7 (42.5 to 59.0ms); females, 58.4±3.3 (50.1 to 66.6ms) vs. 45.6±2.7 (37.4 to 53.9ms); p=0.01 (2.2 to 25.4ms)]. Irrespective of gender there was limited change in P-wave dispersion in response to exercise. Males had a longer P-max versus females during the protocol [109.6±2.3 (105.8 to 113.4ms) vs. 103.6±1.8 (99.8 to 107.4ms); p=0.03] but this was not stage-specific. There was no gender differences in either P-min (p=0.12) or P-wave dispersion (p=0.64) across the protocol or stage-specific. Conclusions: Results from this study indicate that in contrast to P-max and P-min, the P-wave dispersion may not be significantly influenced by the sympathetic nervous system in males and females. Therefore, this study suggests males and females should be evaluated in the same way using the P-wave dispersion for predicting the development of stress-induced PAF at rest and during exercise testing protocols

    Perceptual adaptation by normally hearing listeners to a simulated "hole" in hearing

    Simulations of cochlear implants have demonstrated that the deleterious effects of a frequency misalignment between analysis bands and characteristic frequencies at basally shifted simulated electrode locations are significantly reduced with training. However, a distortion of frequency-to-place mapping may also arise due to a region of dysfunctional neurons that creates a "hole" in the tonotopic representation. This study simulated a 10 mm hole in the mid-frequency region. Noise-band processors were created with six output bands (three apical and three basal to the hole). The spectral information that would have been represented in the hole was either dropped or reassigned to bands on either side. Such reassignment preserves information but warps the place code, which may in itself impair performance. Normally hearing subjects received three hours of training in two reassignment conditions. Speech recognition improved considerably with training. Scores were much lower in a baseline (untrained) condition where information from the hole region was dropped. A second group of subjects trained in this dropped condition did show some improvement; however, scores after training were significantly lower than in the reassignment conditions. These results are consistent with the view that speech processors should present the most informative frequency range irrespective of frequency misalignment. 0 2006 Acoustical Society of America

    Contributions of temporal encodings of voicing, voicelessness, fundamental frequency, and amplitude variation to audiovisual and auditory speech perception

    Auditory and audio-visual speech perception was investigated using auditory signals of invariant spectral envelope that temporally encoded the presence of voiced and voiceless excitation, variations in amplitude envelope and F-0. In experiment 1, the contribution of the timing of voicing was compared in consonant identification to the additional effects of variations in F-0 and the amplitude of voiced speech. In audio-visual conditions only, amplitude variation slightly increased accuracy globally and for manner features. F-0 variation slightly increased overall accuracy and manner perception in auditory and audio-visual conditions. Experiment 2 examined consonant information derived from the presence and amplitude variation of voiceless speech in addition to that from voicing, F-0, and voiced speech amplitude. Binary indication of voiceless excitation improved accuracy overall and for voicing and manner. The amplitude variation of voiceless speech produced only a small increment in place of articulation scores. A final experiment examined audio-visual sentence perception using encodings of voiceless excitation and amplitude variation added to a signal representing voicing and F-0. There was a contribution of amplitude variation to sentence perception, but not of voiceless excitation. The timing of voiced and voiceless excitation appears to be the major temporal cues to consonant identity. (C) 1999 Acoustical Society of America. [S0001-4966(99)01410-1]

    The physical activity experiences of men with serious mental illness: Three short stories

    Objectives: Although a considerable amount of research has explored the effects of physical activity on mental health, the voices of people with mental illness have been largely excluded from published reports. Through this study we aim to foreground service users' voices in order to shed light on the personal and subjective nature of the relationship between physical activity and serious mental illness (SMI). Methods: An interpretive case study approach was used to explore in depth the physical activity experiences of three men with SMI. Creative analytic practice was used to write three creative non-fictions which, as first-person narratives, foreground the participants' voices. Results: We present three short stories in an effort to communicate participants' personal and subjective experiences of physical activity in an accessible, engaging, and evocative manner. We hope to: (i) provide potentially motivating physical activity success stories for others who live with SMI; (ii) increase awareness among mental health professionals of the possibilities of physical activity; and (iii) provide an empathetic understanding of possibilities and problems of living with SMI which may help challenge the stigma surrounding mental illness. Conclusions: For us, the stories communicate the diversity and difference inherent in the ways men with SMI experience physical activity. We reflect on how the short story form allows these differences to be preserved and respected. We resist making further interpretations of the stories preferring instead to encourage the reader to form her or his own conclusions. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Magnetophoretic assembly and printing of nanowires

    Nanowires are a well-established class of materials covering both metals and semiconductors. Although the synthesis of nanowires has been highly developed, their manipulation into specific device structures has lagged behind. Here we report a simple room temperature method for creating directly patterned structures out of nickel nanowires of submicron diameters as previously formed by electrotemplating. Specially shaped magnetic pole-pieces are used to form patterns of these ferromagnetic rods on thin flexible plastic foils, which were then fixed permanently into place either by electrodepositing an additional thin nickel coating or by a UV-curable polymer solution. It is shown that it is possible with oriented and patterned magnetic fields to create both vertically and, by using additional surface tension forces upon drying, horizontally aligned arrays of nickel rods. The authors show that linewidths down to 50 μm can easily be realized with this technique and also show that direct printing of these magnetophoretically assembled structures onto adhesive or rubber substrates is also possible. The simplicity and low-cost inherent in this lithography-free method suggests that it is suitable as a general manufacturing method for nanowire assembly.     Mid-frequency aperture arrays: the future of radio astronomy

    Aperture array (AA) technology is at the forefront of new developments and discoveries in radio astronomy. Currently LOFAR is successfully demonstrating the capabilities of dense and sparse AA's at low frequencies. For the mid-frequencies, from 450 to 1450MHz, AA's still have to prove their scientific value with respect to the existing dish technology. Their large field-of-view and high flexibility puts them in an excellent position to do so. The Aperture Array Verification Program is dedicated to demonstrate the feasibility of AA's for science in general and SKA in particular. For the mid-frequency range this has lead to the development of EMBRACE, which has already demonstrated the enormous flexibility of AA systems by observing HI and a pulsar simultaneously. It also serves as a testbed to demonstrate the technological reliability and stability of AA's. The next step will put AA technology at a level where it can be used for cutting-edge science. In this paper we discuss the developments to move AA technology from an engineering activity to a fully science capable instrument.     Two experiments investigated the perception of compound vs. phrasal stress and narrow focus in normally hearing children and children with Cochlear Implants (CI). Additionally, we investigated whether musical experience would predict children’s performance in these tasks. The results showed no difference between CI and normal-hearing (NH) children in either experiment. However, whereas we found no clear effect of age in the children’s stress detection, there was a clear age related trajectory in the ability to recognise (narrow) focus. Moreover, this trend was similar to what has been found previously for English children. Importantly, prior music experience was significantly linked to CI children’s perception of focus.Peer reviewe

    Understanding the experiences of engaging in a community-based, physical-activity focused secondary stroke prevention program

    Research has evidenced that regular exercise can provide physical and physiological benefits for people living with stroke. Our study aims to explore the experiences of people living with stroke when participating in a community physical activity programme. This programme was created to offer targeted physical activity and education interventions following the discharge of patients from the healthcare pathway. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with 16 participants living with stroke who were recruited from individuals who had engaged with the activity programme. A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted on the data, and four overarching themes were developed: (i) Feelings of appreciation, (ii) Interactions with other patients, (iii) Positive contributions of trained instructors, and iv) Personal progress. Generally, participants reported very positive perceptions of the exercise programme, and were very grateful for the opportunity that the exercise classes provided. We hope that these findings will offer practical suggestions for healthcare providers who might develop similar activity programmes for clinical populations
